Iraq long filled an important role as a heavily militarized buffer state between the Sunni Arab states and the expansion of Shia Iran. As the BBC reports, Iraq is still a buffer state, only now it's joined Iran's security sphere:
"We will not allow Iraq to become a platform for harming the security of Iran and neighbours," Iranian state-run media quoted Mr Maliki as saying after late-night talks with Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.
